A well pump doesn't come with an expiration date stamped on it, but it does have a predictable lifespan if you know what to look for. Most submersible well pumps last between 8 and 15 years, while jet pumps (mounted above ground) typically run 10 to 15 years. Where your pump falls in that range depends heavily on three things: water quality, how often it cycles on and off, and whether the pressure tank paired with it is doing its job.
Sediment and sand are the biggest killers of submersible pumps — grit works its way into the impeller and bearings and wears them down years before their time. A pump that short-cycles (turning on and off rapidly because of a waterlogged pressure tank) takes far more wear than one that runs in long, steady draws. Iron bacteria and mineral buildup can also coat components and force the motor to work harder than it should.
If the pump is under 7 years old and the problem is isolated (a bad capacitor, a tripped breaker, a wiring issue), repair usually makes sense. Past the 10-year mark, especially with a submersible pump that requires pulling the whole assembly out of the well, most well contractors recommend replacement — the labor cost of pulling the pump is similar whether you're fixing it or swapping it, so you're paying to reinstall an aging part either way.
💡 Extend the life of a new pump. Pairing a new pump with a correctly sized, properly precharged pressure tank is the single biggest lever homeowners have. A tank that's too small forces the pump to cycle constantly; correct precharge (2 psi below the pump's cut-in pressure) prevents the waterlogging that leads to short-cycling.
